Introduction
Air pollution has emerged as one of the most serious environmental and public health challenges across the globe, severely affecting human life, climate conditions, and ecological balance. Rapid industrial growth, urbanization, increasing vehicular emissions, factory smoke, and indoor pollutants have significantly increased the concentration of harmful gases and airborne contaminants in the atmosphere.
Harmful gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH₃), methane (CH₄), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can cause severe respiratory disorders, headaches, lung infections, and long-term health complications. Poor indoor and outdoor air quality is becoming increasingly dangerous, especially in densely populated urban regions and industrial zones.
Traditional air quality monitoring systems are generally expensive, bulky, and installed only at fixed monitoring stations. These systems often fail to provide continuous real-time monitoring and remote accessibility, making them unsuitable for large-scale smart city and residential deployments.
This project presents an Intelligent IoT-Based Air Quality & Pollution Monitoring System that continuously monitors environmental conditions using multiple gas and environmental sensors and transmits the collected data to cloud platforms for real-time monitoring, visualization, and analysis.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 99% of the global population breathes air that exceeds safe pollution limits.
Air pollution is responsible for approximately 7 million premature deaths every year worldwide.
Exposure to harmful gases and pollutants is directly linked to asthma, lung cancer, heart disease, and respiratory infections.
Urban pollution levels in many cities exceed recommended AQI safety standards multiple times.
Indoor pollution generated from smoke, gas leakage, and poor ventilation can be extremely harmful to human health.
Early environmental monitoring systems relied on manual measurements and laboratory-based analysis methods, which were time-consuming and lacked real-time monitoring capabilities.
1950s–1970s: Basic industrial gas analyzers were introduced for pollution detection.
1980s–2000s: Automated monitoring stations enabled partial digital monitoring with limited remote access.
Modern Era: IoT-enabled smart monitoring systems provide real-time cloud-based environmental monitoring and intelligent analytics.
The advancement of IoT, embedded systems, wireless communication, and cloud computing has revolutionized environmental monitoring by enabling low-cost, scalable, portable, and real-time smart pollution monitoring solutions.
The proposed system uses Arduino microcontroller technology integrated with MQ135 Air Quality Sensor, MQ5 Gas Sensor, DHT11 Temperature & Humidity Sensor, ESP8266 WiFi Module, LCD Display, and buzzer alert system to continuously monitor air quality and environmental conditions.
The system displays real-time environmental data on LCD while simultaneously uploading sensor data to the ThingSpeak cloud platform through WiFi connectivity for remote monitoring and analysis.
The integrated smart alert system activates a buzzer whenever harmful gas concentration exceeds predefined safety thresholds, helping users take immediate preventive action.
Artificial Intelligence features can also be integrated into the system for:
