📘 Introduction
Electric energy metering has undergone continuous evolution from electromechanical induction-type meters introduced in the early twentieth century to digital and smart meters widely deployed today. Traditional postpaid electricity meters require manual reading and periodic billing cycles, which often lead to billing inaccuracies, delayed payments, and operational inefficiencies. With global electricity demand increasing steadily due to rapid urbanisation and industrialisation, modern energy systems increasingly rely on automated and intelligent metering solutions to improve monitoring accuracy and operational transparency. According to international energy assessments, global electricity consumption has exceeded 28,000 TWh annually, highlighting the growing need for efficient metering and energy management mechanisms.
The scale of electricity metering deployment is significant, with estimates suggesting more than 2 billion electricity meters are currently installed worldwide, including over 300 million smart meters. In countries with developing infrastructure, distribution losses including technical and non-technical losses may range between 15 % and 25 %, much of which is associated with inefficient billing systems and electricity theft. Studies have reported that prepaid metering models can reduce distribution losses by nearly 10–15 % while improving billing recovery rates and promoting responsible energy consumption among users.
Prepaid energy metering systems operate on a pay-before-use principle and integrate advanced embedded electronics, sensing, and communication technologies. These systems typically involve energy measurement units, microcontroller-based processing, communication modules such as GSM or IoT interfaces, relay-based load control, and user display systems. Technical parameters such as voltage monitoring, current sensing, power factor tracking, energy unit calculation (kWh), and load switching are continuously managed through embedded control algorithms. GSM-based communication enables real-time data transmission, remote recharge functionality, and alert messaging for low balance or fault conditions, thereby improving operational efficiency and reliability.
Considering these requirements, a prepaid energy meter system can be implemented using an Arduino microcontroller and GSM communication module to enable accurate energy monitoring and automated billing control. In this system, electrical consumption data is processed in real time, prepaid balance is dynamically updated, and a relay mechanism disconnects the load when credit is exhausted. Supporting hardware such as transformer, voltage regulator, electricity meter, LDR, LCD display, and GSM interface ensures stable operation and user interaction. The proposed system demonstrates a practical, cost-effective, and scalable solution for smart energy monitoring while supporting energy conservation and improved distribution management.
Using Arduino, the system accurately measures the energy usage and communicates with a GSM module to enable real-time data transmission. This allows users to remotely monitor their energy consumption and recharge their prepaid balance as needed, ensuring uninterrupted access to electricity.

⚙️ Methodology
The prepaid energy meter system operates on a pay-before-use principle, where electrical consumption is continuously monitored and deducted from a prepaid balance. The energy meter measures voltage and current to calculate real-time energy consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh). This data is processed by the Arduino UNO, which continuously updates the prepaid balance based on usage. The GSM module allows users to recharge their balance remotely via SMS and also sends alerts for low balance or system updates. When the prepaid balance reaches zero, the relay module automatically disconnects the load to prevent further usage. The 16×2 LCD provides real-time feedback on units consumed, remaining balance, and recharge status. This system demonstrates a practical and efficient solution for smart electricity billing and monitoring, particularly suitable for residential, commercial, and institutional applications.
