Description

Introduction
Mining has been one of the most crucial industries for economic development since the industrial revolution. However, it has also consistently ranked among the most dangerous occupations in the world. Historically, miners have faced life-threatening hazards such as toxic gas exposure, high temperatures, humidity, suffocation due to oxygen depletion, and physical accidents from cave-ins or equipment failure. Traditional protective helmets provided only physical protection, leaving workers vulnerable to invisible dangers like carbon monoxide, methane, and other poisonous gases.
According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), mining accounts for less than 1% of the global workforce but contributes to around 8% of all fatal workplace accidents. Data shows that in coal mining alone, methane explosions and toxic gas inhalation remain the leading causes of fatalities, especially in developing nations where safety monitoring is minimal. For instance, thousands of miners worldwide suffer from gas inhalation incidents every year, and underground temperature/humidity levels often exceed safe thresholds, increasing the risk of dehydration and heat strokes. These alarming statistics emphasise the urgent need for smart, technology-driven safety solutions.
To address these challenges, this project introduces an IoT-based Smart Helmet for Miners. The helmet integrates multiple sensors: MQ7 & MQ135 gas sensors for detecting carbon monoxide, methane, and other toxic gases. DHT11 sensor for monitoring temperature and humidity. IR sensor for shock/impact detection.
The data from these sensors is processed by an Arduino microcontroller and displayed on a 16×2 LCD screen for real-time updates. Simultaneously, the system triggers a buzzer alarm when dangerous conditions are detected and transmits live readings to an IoT dashboard via Wi-Fi (ESP8266). This enables remote monitoring by supervisors, ensuring rapid response in emergencies.
The helmet thus enhances traditional physical protection by adding an intelligent, real-time monitoring system, ensuring better safety, faster rescue operations, and improved trust in mining environments.

Methodology
The intelligent helmet operates by constantly checking mine environmental parameters using various sensors. Gas sensors (MQ6, MQ7, MQ135) identify harmful gases such as methane, carbon monoxide, and overall air pollution. The LM35 and DHT11 sensors check for heat and humidity levels to prevent miners from being subjected to harsh conditions. The IR sensor checks for helmet wear, only allowing shielded miners into dangerous areas. Arduino UNO processes all data gathered and presents readings on a 16×2 LCD. At the same time, ESP8266 Wi-Fi module sends the data to the ThingSpeak IoT cloud, where supervisors can monitor remotely and respond immediately in case of threshold crossing. This approach gives real-time alerts and predictive safety management, hence making mining operations safer and more reliable.
