Our project intends to create wireless sensor networks, implement real-time surveillance with early-warning intelligence on dangerous gases, temperature, and humidity in mining areas, and employ Zigbee communication to eliminate potential safety issues in coal extraction.

DESCRIPTION

Smart helmet has been developed that is able to detect of hazardous events in the mines industry. In the development of helmet, we have considered the four main types of hazards such as air quality, helmet removal, fire and object against the head with a force. The first is the concentration level of the hazardous gases such as CO, SO2, NO2, and particulate matter. The second hazardous event was classified as a miner removing the mining helmet off their head. An IR sensor was developed unsuccessfully but an off-the shelf IR sensor was then used to successfully determine when the helmet is on the miner’s head. The third hazardous event is fire sensor DTH11, it is used as a simple and compact device for protection against fire. The fourth makes use of IR sensor/ Vibration sensor/ Force Sensor to detect miners’ collision with the heavy objects /head injuries HIC (Head Injury Criteria), miner stuck under rocks, etc.
