Introduction

The development of portable and intelligent cutting systems has become increasingly important due to the rising demand for compact manufacturing solutions, low-cost automation, and energy-efficient fabrication technologies. Pneumatic systems have been widely adopted in industrial automation because of their simplicity, high force-to-weight ratio, fast response time, and lower maintenance requirements compared to hydraulic systems. A Pneumatic Sheet Cutter is an automated or semi-automated cutting mechanism that utilizes compressed air to actuate a pneumatic cylinder for generating cutting force on thin sheets and lightweight materials.

Historically, sheet cutting operations were primarily performed using manual cutters and hydraulic presses, which required significant human effort and occupied larger operational spaces. With the advancement of mechatronics, compact pneumatic systems combined with electronic control have enabled portable cutting solutions suitable for workshops, educational laboratories, small-scale manufacturing industries, and field applications.

The proposed Pneumatic Sheet Cutter integrates a DC air compressor, pneumatic cylinder, solenoid valve, portable lithium battery system, and mechanical linkage to create a lightweight and mobile cutting mechanism. Pneumatic actuation operates based on compressed air energy conversion where pressure energy is transformed into linear mechanical motion. According to Pascal’s Law, pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted equally in all directions, enabling the cylinder piston to generate large cutting forces using relatively low electrical power.

The cutting force generated by pneumatic systems can be represented by:

F = P × A

Where:

F = Force generated by cylinder (N), P = Air Pressure (Pa), A = Effective piston area (m²)

The piston area is: A = πD² / 4

Where:

D = Diameter of piston (m)

This relationship demonstrates that increasing cylinder diameter or operating pressure directly increases cutting capability.

Portable pneumatic cutting systems reduce operator fatigue, improve repeatability, increase safety, and provide efficient sheet cutting with lower operational complexity, making them suitable for modern engineering applications and industrial automation environments.

Working

The Pneumatic Sheet Cutter is constructed using a lithium-ion battery, DC air compressor, solenoid valve, pneumatic cylinder, pneumatic tubing, and cutting mechanism. Initially, the 12V lithium-ion battery is connected to the DC compressor to provide electrical power for compressed air generation. The output of the compressor is connected to the input port of the solenoid valve using pneumatic tubing. The solenoid valve acts as a control component that regulates the compressed air flow toward the pneumatic cylinder.

The output ports of the solenoid valve are connected to the pneumatic cylinder through air pipes. The piston rod of the pneumatic cylinder is mechanically connected to the cutting lever mechanism. The cutting blade assembly is mounted on the cutting platform where sheet material is placed for cutting operation. A control switch is connected between the battery supply and solenoid valve circuit for manual activation.

During operation, when power is supplied, the compressor starts generating compressed air and builds pressure inside the pneumatic line. Upon activating the control switch, the solenoid valve opens and allows compressed air to enter the pneumatic cylinder. Due to the pressure difference inside the cylinder chamber, the piston rod extends outward and produces linear motion. This linear motion is transferred through the lever mechanism to the cutting blade, producing sufficient force to cut the sheet material placed below it.

The force generated by the pneumatic cylinder can be expressed as:

F = P × A

Where:

F = Generated Cutting Force (N)

P = Pneumatic Pressure (Pa)

A = Effective Piston Area (m²)

The piston area is calculated as:

A = πD² / 4

Where:

D = Diameter of Cylinder Piston (m)

After completion of the cutting cycle, releasing the switch stops air flow and the piston returns to its initial position, preparing the system for the next cutting operation. This process enables efficient, portable, and low-effort sheet cutting using compressed air technology.
