Introduction

The twentieth and early twenty-first centuries have witnessed a massive surge in vehicle ownership, fueled by economic growth and urban expansion. While this revolutionized mobility, it also led to an alarming increase in road accidents worldwide, especially in densely populated nations like India where mixed traffic conditions persist. In 2024 alone, India recorded approximately 180,000 road accident fatalities, and the grim toll rose further in 2025 with over 160,000 deaths across more than 450,000 accidentsNational Highways accounted for 26,770 fatalities in just the first half of 2025—an average of 147 deaths per day.

Modern vehicle safety systems now leverage embedded sensors, GPS, and IoT connectivity to detect emergencies in real time. Impact sensors can identify collision events instantly, while GPS and map-matching algorithms can locate the vehicle precisely on the road network. With IoT modules—such as Bluetooth or GSM—the system can promptly transmit alerts to rescue centers, emergency contacts, or medical services, significantly reducing rescue time and improving survival chances.

The proposed IoT Vehicle Accident Detection Alert System using Arduino combines these technologies. An impact sensor detects a collision and triggers an alert buzzer, giving the driver time to respond. If unacknowledged, the system automatically dispatches an emergency message with location data via IoT connectivity. This smart, low‑cost solution not only aligns with the urgent need to tackle India’s evolving road safety crisis but also offers a ready prototype for automotive and IoT engineering projects.

This cutting-edge system offers a range of advantages, including real-time vehicle monitoring, instant accident detection, and accurate alcohol level assessments in drivers. By leveraging these capabilities, it effectively mitigates risks and ensures swift emergency response, thereby making roads safer for everyone.

Objectives:

  1. To develop a real-time accident detection system using Arduino and sensors.
  2. To notify the driver with a buzzer and allow manual confirmation via a reset button.
  3. To automatically send an emergency alert if the driver fails to respond.
  4. To demonstrate the system using a Bluetooth-controlled car prototype.
  5. To enhance road safety by providing timely alerts to nearby emergency services or authorities.

List of Components Required:

  1. Arduino UNO – Microcontroller board for system control
  2. Alcohol Sensor – Detects presence of alcohol from the driver’s breath
  3. Push Button – Used for driver response/reset confirmation
  4. Buzzer – Audio alert for accident detection
  5. Vibration Sensor – Detects impact or sudden collision
  6. LCD (16×2) – Displays system status and messages
  7. GPS Module – Provides real-time location tracking
  8. IoT Module (ESP8266/Bluetooth/GSM) – Sends alert to emergency contacts
  9. L293D Motor Driver – Controls the movement of DC motors
  10. DC Motors (2x) – Drive the prototype vehicle
  11. Battery Pack – Powers the system components
  12. 5V Power Supply – Regulates power to sensors and modules
  13. Jumper Wires – For internal circuit connections

Methodology:

  1. Arduino UNO acts as the central microcontroller, processing sensor and button inputs.
  2. A vibration/ impact sensor detects a sudden shock or accident.
  3. Upon detection, a buzzer sounds for 20 seconds as a prompt for the driver.
  4. If the reset button is not pressed, the system triggers a GSM module to send an emergency alert with Live Coordinates.
  5. The message can be configured to notify the owner, police, hospital, or ambulance services.
  6. A Bluetooth-controlled car prototype is built using:
    • L293D Motor Driver
    • 2 DC motors for vehicle motion
    • A smartphone app to simulate driving and trigger accident events
  7. The prototype simulates real-world accident detection and emergency notification with affordable components.
