📘 Introduction

As the demand for renewable energy is increasing, solar panels have become the most used technology in sustainable power generation. Fixed solar panels, though, do not make use of maximum sunlight throughout the day because the position of the sun changes. This limits overall efficiency and power generation. For this purpose, solar tracking systems are used which change the panel’s orientation towards the sun automatically.

This project demonstrates an IoT-Based Single Axis Solar Panel Monitoring System with Arduino UNO. The system employs two LDR sensors to measure sunlight intensity on either side of the solar panel. An L293D motor driver controls a DC motor to rotate the solar panel along a single axis based on their measurements. Moreover, the project combines a DHT11 temperature & humidity sensor, solar voltage sensing by a voltage divider circuit, and a current sensor for monitoring current. The data is shown on a 16×2 LCD screen in real-time.

In order to IoT-enable the system, an ESP8266 Wi-Fi module loads the sensor data onto the cloud (ThingSpeak) so that users can check temperature, humidity, voltage, and current trends remotely. The system runs on a 12V rechargeable battery, making it efficient, reliable, and completely portable. It maximizes power generation, enhances monitoring capabilities, and optimizes the use of renewable energy.

🎯 Objectives

  • To Track the Sun’s position using LDRs and rotate the solar panel.
  • To Monitor solar panel voltage and current in real time.
  • To Measure temperature and humidity with DHT11.
  • To Display all sensor readings on a 16×2 LCD.
  • To Upload IoT data to ThingSpeak cloud using ESP8266.
  • To Enhance solar energy efficiency.

⚙️ Methodology

The system functions by constantly checking the intensity of sunlight through two LDR sensors located on opposite sides of the solar panel. Arduino UNO takes readings and compares them. When one LDR gets more sunlight than the other, Arduino triggers a signal to the L293D motor driver, which turns the DC motor until the solar panel receives maximum sunlight. This maximizes orientation throughout the day.In addition to tracking, the system also keeps an eye on temperature and humidity using the DHT11 sensor, and voltage and current provided by the solar panel using a voltage divider circuit and current sensor. These values are shown on the 16×2 LCD display for real-time monitoring. For remote monitoring, the Arduino interacts with the ESP8266 Wi-Fi module, which sends all the sensor readings to the ThingSpeak IoT cloud. The users can view live graphical trends of voltage, current, and environmental parameters remotely. The entire system is powered by a 12V rechargeable battery, thus being self-sustainable and IoT-compatible.
