The Arduino monitors ambient and surface temperatures. If it rises above 25°C, it triggers the relay to power the Peltier module. A heat sink with a 12V fan removes heat while a 5V fan circulates cool air inside the helmet. When the temperature drops below 18°C, the relay turns off, creating an automatic ON/OFF cycle that maintains comfort and saves power.

Introduction

In recent decades, the use of protective helmets has become mandatory and widespread across industries—ranging from construction sites and industrial zones to two-wheeler riders and traffic police personnel. While traditional helmets offer protection from physical injuries, they do not address thermal comfort, especially in hot and humid climates like India. With average summer temperatures often exceeding 40°C (104°F) in several states, users frequently report sweating, dizziness, fatigue, and even heatstroke, especially during prolonged outdoor use.

The modern helmet evolved in the early 20th century for military and motorcycling applications, primarily focused on shock absorption. However, thermal discomfort remained unaddressed. According to a 2021 survey by WHO, over 35% of motorcyclists and 45% of traffic officers in tropical countries experience discomfort due to heat stress while wearing helmets for more than 2 hours.

Recent advancements in wearable electronics, IoT, and thermoelectric cooling (Peltier modules) have opened doors to smart solutions that combine safety with comfort. The idea of intelligent cooling helmets is gaining popularity in defence, sports, healthcare, and civil use cases.

Objectives:

  • Temperature Regulation: Maintain comfortable interior temperature using DHT11 and LM35 sensors.
  • Automated Cooling Control: Use Arduino to switch Peltier module ON/OFF based on real-time temperature.
  • Effective Heat Dissipation: Integrate 12V DC fans and heat sink to manage excess heat from the Peltier system.
  • Power Efficiency: Operate cooling mechanism only when needed, optimising battery usage.
