Drowsiness Detection using Python & Arduino

📘 Introduction:

Driver drowsiness is a major cause of automobile accidents, resulting in many fatalities each year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and traffic safety research, driver fatigue has been cited as the primary cause of thousands of road crashes every year, contributing to a large percentage of highway crashes and fatalities. Studies reveal that drowsiness affects reaction time, attention, and decision-making skills and is as risky as driving while intoxicated. Across the world, drowsiness-related accidents result in massive human and financial losses, and estimates indicate that 10–20% of all road accidents are caused by driver fatigue. This is a worrisome trend which emphasizes the need for efficient detection systems, preventive systems, and awareness programs to improve road safety and minimize accident-related losses.
This project aims at creating a driver drowsiness detection system based on Python-based image processing through OpenCV and an Arduino-mediated alerting mechanism. The system detects the driver’s eye through a camera interface. When drowsiness indicators (eye closure exceeding a safe level or detection of yawning) are identified, the system sends a signal to an Arduino-mediated buzzer to alert the driver. The system also implemented with alcohol detection sensor which sends data on Arduino to trigger buzzer to alert the driver and a relay which stops the wheels of the vehicle for the safety of driver. Both the status of drowsiness and alcohol detection shows on a 16×2 lcd.  The project unites computer vision, embedded systems, and IoT safety applications to be strongly related to road safety and preventing accidents.

🔧 Objectives:
• To detect eye-blink frequency and prolonged closure using Python & OpenCV.
• To alert the driver through Arduino-controlled buzzer when drowsiness is detected.
• To integrate software (Python) and hardware (Arduino) for real-time safety applications.
• To explore applications in automotive safety, smart vehicles, and transport monitoring systems.
