Introduction
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used parameter to measure the health of a person and verify whether he/she is underweight, normal, overweight, or obese based on weight in relation to height. Traditional methods of calculating BMI are manual measurement and calculation, which can lead to inaccuracies and inefficiency, especially in public or clinical settings. This project demonstrates the principles and operation of an Automatic BMI Measuring Machine with Arduino, using an ultrasonic sensor for non-touch measurement of height and load cell with HX711 amplifier for accurate measurement of weight.
The height of the individual is calculated first by using the ultrasonic sensor placed above. The height is then obtained by subtracting the distance read from the fixed sensor height. In the meantime, the individual stands on a load cell embedded platform to determine his weight. The BMI is calculated by the Arduino microcontroller by the formula:
BMI = Height(m) / Weight (kg)
The final BMI reading is shown on an LCD screen together with the corresponding health class (e.g., Underweight, Normal, Overweight, Obese). The device is inexpensive, compact, and easy to use and is appropriate for application in health kiosks, schools, exercise facilities, clinics, and rural health facilities. The device promotes health metrics awareness and can be used to provide the early identification of body-weight-related health risks.
📈 BMI Health Categories (for reference):
- BMI < 18.5 → Underweight
- 18.5 ≤ BMI < 24.9 → Normal
- 25.0 ≤ BMI < 29.9 → Overweight
- BMI ≥ 30.0 → Obese
Objectives

Working Principle:
