📝 Introduction

Road accidents involving two-wheelers are a major cause of fatalities worldwide. Often, victims remain unattended for critical minutes due to delayed communication. This project aims to provide a real-time accident detection and alert system for bike riders using an ESP32 microcontroller integrated with GPS & GSM modules.

An accelerometer sensor continuously monitors the bike’s tilt and impact. When a fall or collision is detected, the system activates a buzzer for 10 seconds as a warning. If the rider presses the reset/manual button within this time, the alert is cancelled. If no response is received, the ESP32 automatically sends the live GPS location to a pre-set mobile number via GSM. The link can be opened in Google Maps to show the exact accident location.

Road accidents are a major global issue, causing a significant number of deaths and injuries every year. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1.19 million people lose their lives annually due to road traffic accidents. In India, the situation is even more critical, where data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways reports over 1.5 lakh deaths per year, with two-wheeler riders contributing to a large proportion of these fatalities.

One of the most serious challenges associated with road accidents is the delay in emergency response. Many victims are unable to seek help due to unconsciousness or severe injuries. The concept of the Golden Hour highlights that timely medical assistance within the first hour after an accident can significantly increase survival chances. However, due to the lack of immediate communication and location tracking, rescue operations are often delayed.

Considering these challenges, there is a strong need for an automated accident detection and alert system that can operate without human intervention. The system should be capable of detecting accidents in real time, sending accurate location details to emergency contacts, and reducing response time. It should also be cost-effective, reliable, and easy to implement for widespread use.

This project presents an ESP32-based Accident Detection and Alert System designed to enhance road safety. The system uses an accelerometer sensor (such as MPU6050 or ADXL335) to continuously monitor the motion and tilt of the vehicle. When abnormal movement or a crash is detected, the ESP32 processes the data and triggers a buzzer for 10 seconds.

During this time, the user has the option to cancel the alert using a reset button in case of false detection. If the alert is not cancelled, the system automatically retrieves the real-time location using a GPS module and sends an emergency SMS via a GSM module to predefined contacts. The message includes a Google Maps link, allowing quick and accurate location tracking.

⚙️ Methodology

The accelerometer sensor constantly monitors the tilt and movement of the bike. When a fall or abnormal tilt beyond a set threshold is detected, the ESP32 triggers a buzzer for 10 seconds. If the reset button is pressed within this period, the system cancels the alert.

If not, the ESP32 uses the GPS module to fetch the real-time location and sends it to a pre-configured mobile number via the GSM module. The message contains a clickable Google Maps link for quick access to the location. A manual button is also provided to instantly send an emergency alert without waiting for detection.

Conclusion

This project provides a smart, reliable, and cost-effective solution for accident detection and emergency response. By reducing the time required to notify emergency services and providing precise location information, the system has the potential to save lives, especially for two-wheeler riders and individuals traveling in remote areas. The integration of IoT and embedded systems makes it a practical and scalable approach toward improving road safety.
