The system is composed of an ultrasonic sensor, a microcontroller unit, a pneumatic bumper mechanism, an air pump, and a solenoid valve. The ultrasonic sensor continuously monitors the distance to nearby objects. When an obstacle is detected within a predefined range, the microcontroller processes the signal and activates the pneumatic bumper system to respond accordingly.
If the vehicle detects an object at 30 cm → slow down.
If it’s 10 cm and approaching fast → activate air bumper + trigger ABS-like braking.

Introduction
Road safety has become a major area of innovation with rising levels of vehicle collision and human error. In this project, the design of a smart pneumatic bumper car using an Arduino microcontroller, ultrasonic sensor, and air-powered actuator is explained to minimize the impacts of collision. The system has two phases: preventive control and emergency response. In the preventive phase, the ultrasonic sensor continues to monitor the distance between the vehicle and the approaching obstacle. When the object is at a threshold of safety, the Arduino slows down the vehicle to avoid danger. In the emergency phase, when the time to collision is growing increasingly short—implying the accident is imminent—the system activates a pneumatic bumper system. Compressed air is released through a solenoid valve, which rapidly deploys the bumper to absorb impact and minimize damage. This prototype demonstrates a cost-effective and efficient way of implementing active collision avoidance and passive impact absorption systems in vehicles. It combines embedded electronics, pneumatic control, and sensor-based automation to enhance vehicle safety and reduce front-end impact effect.
